It's 12:07 AM on June 30th. Portfolio checks begin July 1st. I have been staring at an empty document on my laptop screen for the past hour, after deleting over a page and a half of previously-written reflection. I can't come up with a way to start this year in review without being trite; without saying “My freshman year at UC was...”; without using the words “unbelievable”, “incredible”, or “both better and worse than I expected”. I guess I'll jump right in.
It's the end of August. I'm trying to sleep in a cabin with a dozen other girls. Someone is snoring loudly directly to my left. Someone else has borrowed my phone charger. Another someone has doused herself in bug spray, and I can smell it from my bunk. It's over ninety degrees outside. I have been avoiding every camera I've seen all day, and I will continue to do so until I've had a shower. I am not in my element, and all I want is to go back to my dorm, have a shower, and soak up as much air conditioning as I can. The situation I am in is not one that immediately comes to mind when I think “retreat”.
***Due to the personal nature of my year in review, the full version is available upon request. You can email me at [email protected] if you'd like to read the rest of it!***
